What You Can Find On This Page
This page will consolidate a lot of information for the unit. While the unit may be many lessons long, I have found that it is helpful to also have everything together in one place, in case you just need to quickly refer back to something but can’t remember the exact lesson it comes from. I ask that you PLEASE share with me if you find any information/resources that I should include for future students. Any great resources/examples/videos that I can add would be wonderful! But also, if you find something that I link here that ends up being a dead link, please let me know. I will try to keep these pages as updated as possible!!
You can click on each of these links below and it should bring you to that section on this page.

Overview of the Unit
This unit covers basic function operations. Most operations that we think about are addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. However, this unit will also introduce a new operation that can only be done with functions: function composition. Our first three lessons help to review some basic skills from Algebra 1 and remind us of what functions are and what they look like. Once we feel more comfortable with a function, we compose them in our fourth lesson. Function composition is one of my FAVORITE things to do in math, so let’s jump in!!
This unit has 4 lessons currently. The individual pages for each of these lessons can be found here, if you wish to go to them directly:
- Lesson 1.1 – Monomials & Polynomials
- Lesson 1.2 – Polynomial Operations
- Lesson 1.3 – Function Operations
- Lesson 1.4 – Composition of Functions
This unit also has 3 EFFL lessons, which make up your Math Applications grade.
- Lesson B – “How Long Will it Take?”
- Lesson C – “Pumpkin Pi Bakery, Pt. 1”
- Lesson D – “Pumpkin Pi Bakery, Pt. 2”
Lesson Videos
The EdPuzzle questions are still required for your grade! However, if you prefer to watch the videos through without interruption, or if you want to reference the notes again without the questions getting in the way, I have linked the exact same videos here. One benefit is that these videos do not require you to log in to Google, so they are available beyond the semester. This allows you to reference them whenever you need, even if it is next school year!!
Lesson 1.1 – Monomials & Polynomials
Lesson 1.2 – Polynomial Operations
Lesson 1.3 – Function Operations
Lesson 1.4 – Composition of Functions
“Outside” Resources (Videos, Explanations, etc.)
The following links go directly to outside resources that I find. I’ve tried to make sure they are focused and well-made. I love the virtual nerd videos – they are like mine (short-ish and focused on just one or two types of problems), but with better graphics! Unfortunately, virtual nerd videos aren’t available for all lessons. I will also try to link other information I find here as well (helpful websites, etc.). If you ever find a good resource/video that I should add, please let me know! Extra credit may be awarded for really great resources!!
The following videos are NOT MINE! They come from a wonderful website called Virtual Nerd. It is kind of hard to search on the Virtual Nerd website directly, so I generally google something like “Virtual Nerd Polynomials” and then I can find the list of videos I want to look at. I’ve “labeled” the videos with the lesson they most closely relate to.

THIS article from Khan academy includes some practice problems to help review Composition of Functions. I really like the clear way the problems are broken down. You could even do a few more practice problems if you wanted to, since it is Khan Academy!
Documents to Download
I can only share certain information freely on my website, as I did not create all resources that I use in my classroom. However, look to your syllabus for the password (hint: it’s the one we usually use for MathXL), and that will allow you to download any of the resources I have linked below. I will try to label each document clearly so you know what it is!

Anything Else I Have to Share
Anything random and extra that I have for the unit will be included here. It may be an extra activity, extra links or videos that I want to highlight but aren’t directly needed for the unit, visuals that I think are helpful, etc. As usual, if you find anything great you think I should include here, please share for a chance to earn some extra credit!!
